South On A1A 02:20
SOUTH ON A1A Verse I look out the window and I stare into space Thinking that I’ve got to get out of this place To somewhere with sun, somewhere with sand Someplace I can get a permanent tan I’m packing my bag and heading south on A1A Verse Making my way to a life on the beach And Key West puts that dream within reach I sold my house, said “Bye” to my friends Now I’ll hit the road ‘til I get to the end I’m packing my bag and heading south on A1A Bridge Don’t know why I waited so long To take this tropical trip But I’m heading down to the Florida sun ‘Til I reach the southernmost tip (guitar solo) (repeat Bridge) Verse My friends think I am out of my head And tell me to sleep it off back in bed They think this is a desperate act But I know that I won’t be coming back I’m packing my bag and heading south on A1A

A FULL MOON AND A SAILBOAT Verse Being on the water is the closest I can find To being in a perfect state of heart or state of mind Breezes fill the canvas and move me through the sea And take me to some new place that I cannot wait to be Chorus Under a full moon on a sailboat in the Gulf of Mexico Where the warm winds take me is where I will go The world is all around me, so I won’t be alone With a full moon and a sailboat and the Gulf of Mexico Verse The sun wakes me each morning and the moon puts me to bed And rain can wash me clean so I can face what lies ahead Even storms can teach me something that I did not know Lessons to take with me anywhere that I might go (repeat Chorus) Bridge Some folks think I’m crazy and that I don’t have a plan They think I’ll get lost out here, but I know where I am (repeat Chorus)
3.
Ginger Girl 03:14
GINGER GIRL Verse Ginger girl brings her world Into mine like a gulf coast breeze Holds my hand on the sun-bleached sand And makes the world a home for me Verse When she smiles all the miles Of my life just seem to fall away She moves near and whispers in my ear And tells me we will be okay Bridge 1 Walking with her out along the bay The worries of my mind just slip away (guitar solo) Bridge 2 She knows just how to calm me down And show me that a better world can be found (repeat Verse 1)

HEADING FOR AN ISLAND Verse I’m heading for an island that’s faraway There’s just too many people around me today I just need some quiet, I need some peace Where it doesn’t sound like a flock of rabid geese You might say that sounds too strong But I’ve been peopling too long So I just need to find a place Where quiet hits me in the face So I’m heading for an island that’s faraway Verse I’m heading for an island out on the seas That’s covered with white sand and tall palm trees I don’t know if it’s a place I can find Or if it just exists somewhere in my mind I just know I need to go Someplace I can take it slow Someplace where the sky is blue And ocean breezes blow on through So I’m heading for an island out on the seas Verse I’m heading for an island that I have found And I can’t wait to get to where I’m bound Right now I don’t know how long I will stay I’m just glad that I found a warm getaway I just need to clear my brain With sounds of surf and soft, warm rain And walk through moonlight, sun, and sand Before I head back home again So I’m heading for an island that I have found Yes, I’m heading for an island that I have found

I Found You 03:07
I FOUND YOU Verse 1 Sometimes life just doesn’t go The way you want it to When that was happening to me I found you Verse 2 I don’t know just what went wrong And changed the world I knew But when I thought I’d lost it all I found you Bridge When we walk at night we see the moonlight on the beach You help me believe the world I long for is in reach Verse 3 Now I’m finding wonder that I thought I long outgrew ‘Cause when I couldn’t find myself I found you (repeat Bridge) (repeat Verse 3)
7.
Key West 03:33
KEY WEST Verse There is a place at the end of the road Where the water is warm and life can be slow Sometimes I think we should leave this all behind And make our way down there and see what we can find Chorus Key West is a place that I often think of We’ll get away from the rat race and life’s push and shove We need to find someplace we can get some rest Maybe we should head down to Key West Verse The sun in my eyes and my toes in the sand You by my side while we walk hand in hand That’s what I see when I picture that place The thought of us down there puts a smile back on my face (repeat Chorus) (Harmonica solo) Bridge The kids are grown and I don’t know what we’re still working for So let’s pack it in, we’ll call it a win, and head on out of the door (repeat Chorus) I think it’s time we head down to Key West
8.
Florida Sand 02:34
FLORIDA SAND Intro I’m heading down to the Florida sand I can’t wait ‘til I’m holding your hand Chorus I’m heading down to the Florida sand I can't wait ‘til I'm holding my hand Verse You and me and fun in the sea Is what we need and the sun is free Tunes on the beach make me get up and dance And in the moonlight we’ll find romance (repeat Chorus) Bridge Sun, sand, fun! (guitar solo) Verse Being with you is the cherry on top Of this summertime sundae that just won’t stop Come next year I’ll be back again For you and sun and fun in the sand (repeat Chorus) (repeat Bridge) (repeat Intro) (repeat Chorus)

ALONG THE WAY I’ve sailed around the sun so many times I’ve still got a few trips left in me There’s a few more things that I would like to do There’s a few more things I’d like to see And when I get where I am bound I hope I’ve lived up to the love that I have found My journey’s had its share of storm clouds I steered into the wind and made it through There were times I thought I might go under Still, somehow I found my way to you Your heart was there to guide me home Like a lighthouse guiding me away from life alone Now I’m on another trip around the sun When it will all end no one can say But to love and be loved is the greatest Of all the lessons learned along the way

about

Back in the late 1990s I played in a band called “A1A South.” We did covers of songs by Jimmy Buffett and The Beach Boys, along with other songs we liked from the 60s and 70s.

Because I am the way I am, I wanted to have at least one original tune to do, so I wrote a song called “South on A1A,” which sounded kind of Beach Boy-like with lyrics that leaned in more of a Buffett direction.

Eventually, we all went off in different directions, although we would occasionally get together for one thing or another. But I had this tune lying around and I hate to waste songs.

Well, I was thinking about doing the RPM Challenge this year when the news came through that Jimmy Buffett had passed away. I always thought he was a vastly underrated singer/songwriter who (though successful) never got the credit he deserved for work. I started thinking about the song “South on A1A” and decided to write an album of songs to go with it that would combine some elements of Jimmy Buffett and The Beach Boys. Not an unprecedented thing. I mean, “Kokomo” by The Beach Boys had a tropical vibe and Jimmy wrote the lyrics for a song on Brian Wilson’s solo album “Imagination” called “South American” that is excellent.

I spent a couple months writing the rest of the material. So, I hope you like this group of songs because I think they turned out pretty good. I also hope that they reflect my love and respect for the artists that inspired them.
